Around the World and Back Again

Andrew Lawrence Schiff is the chef and owner of Oak&Fig Baking. A life-long baker, Andrew took a 25-year detour as a fashion designer before returning to his roots and his true passion.

Andrew worked through college as a pastry chef and line cook, including classic Los Angeles landmarks Le Saint Germain and Stratton’s while earning degrees in painting, sculpture and fashion design.

Based in New York and later Minneapolis, his career sent him around the world for inspiration and is where he honed his palette and passion for authentic, unusual flavors and ingredients. His cakes, pies, hand pies and cookies reflect inspiration ranging from high French pastry to rustic Indian street food, Middle Eastern spices to Midwestern family dinners.

Oak&Fig was born after a major life shift away from corporate life and a relocation to his hometown of Oakland, CA. Oak&Fig made its name as a mainstay at the enormous First Friday street festival in Oakland as well as frequent pop-ups at local breweries, events, and birthday parties around the Bay.

In 2021, Andrew heeded a call him back to the midwest to work at renowned Minneapolis bakery Patisserie 46. Oak&Fig was reborn a year later.

Andrew’s cakes and desserts are built with the detailed eye of an artist and inspired by a lifetime of world travel. Oak&Fig Baking is committed to using the finest regionally-sourced, organic ingredients.

Specializing in celebration cakes, each unique and detailed design is part of an artist’s ongoing exploration of material and form. And using highest quality, in-season ingredients means everything tastes as good as it looks.
